You can actually see this as the soup will start to have a brownish cast. It won't taste burnt really, but it will have a distinctive scorched taste. WebbIt takes longer than an hour, I’ve made a lot of split pea soup without even soaking the dried split green or yellow peas first. I think you need 2 quarts of liquid for a pound bag of dried peas, and you just need to simmer it for however long it takes to get the consistency you like, could take 2 hours.
